Every now and then, you’ll stumble upon a trend that just doesn’t seem to go away. From time to time, these trends can be silly, like the ever-popular planking meme. Other times, they can be a little bit more serious, such as stage diving. As you might have guessed, a stage channel in Discord is a public chat room where you can discuss something that’s either related to a certain streamer or video game, or something entirely different.

what is a stage channel in discord?

Limited Run Games is a publisher of limited edition physical games. There are other companies like Strictly Limited doing similar things, but Limited Run Games is the leader as far as I’m concerned in this very interesting world of limited edition video games. Recently, their popularity has only increased as collectors want to collect a wide range of their products, whether it’s their favorite games or those who just like to collect all the releases.

To be perfectly honest, I recently reviewed the Japanese collector’s edition of 2064 by MidBoss and I immediately fell in love with the artwork and everything else. Getting the previous US release has taken me on a long and crazy journey into a niche market that is exploding in popularity and where there are still many pieces to unravel.

Principles of rarity and the history of the limited edition for collectors

If you don’t know much about fashion, you might be shocked by the prices some designers charge, which is often justified: the brand sets the price, but there’s a lot more to it than that. First of all, most products are very limited and very few are manufactured (meticulous hand work). The materials, the artisans’ time (a few hours each for a decent wage) and much more create the conditions that allow them to set a meaningful price for their products.

The streetwear market goes one step further by printing and releasing a limited number of T-shirts, while the secondary market decides what is hype and what is not, and then prices go up for miles due to lack of product.

Video games have long had collector’s editions with lots of extras (cards, keychains, figurines, hats, t-shirts, etc.) for fans of the game. Often they were only available by pre-order (to see how many had to be made) or only a few came in each shop, just because there was a lot of demand or because you wanted to make a real collector’s item out of it.

The value of these collector’s editions has risen and fallen over time, and items like the original World of Warcraft collector’s edition continue to increase in value. At the same time, they also became something of a legacy, long forgotten when games went digital and video game vendors and department stores no longer wanted to walk around with bulky boxes that didn’t sell.

In 2015, a company called Limited Run Games started releasing physical editions, and over time games like Celeste, Iconoclasts, Turok and others appeared. The gaming community welcomed these releases, not only because of their physical nature (with covers, goodies, etc.), but also because many games would never have seen a physical release without a company like Limited Run Games making it economically feasible for the developer.

Understanding product versions

So there are different levels of distribution for these games.

The first is open pre-ordering, where they take as many pre-orders as they want (within their purchase limit) and do the same. They’re usually open for a few weeks, and if you buy it during the open pre-order period, you’ll be fine.

The next one is a limited edition, where the developer decides how many copies to distribute. They open on a specific date and time and are available on a first-come, first-served basis with purchase restrictions.

Then there are the games they just release and sell as regular games during the product’s life cycle.

Finally, there are versions from Best Buy and other retailers that differ from the original limited edition and are generally of decent quality.

A limited number of copies of each edition have been selected by the developer. They withhold 10% (according to their FAQs) for shipping errors that are corrected later, after all shipments are completed. So that’s it. Each subsequent re-release will be marketed by retailers like Best Buy and their other partners, with different artwork and even a different publisher for the game.

Secondary market

This is where the fun factor comes in. Unless you bought the game as part of a pre-order, or unless it’s a product that’s constantly on sale, there’s virtually no way to officially order a first-person game.

This means it’s time to look at the secondary market, for example. B. Sellers on Amazon for limited edition games, eBay, and Facebook (even Mercari participates). Basically all sites where people can sell their stuff offer these LRG games, and that’s where it gets complicated.

The price/value of the game is determined in a similar way to a hype market. The price may be determined by the hype surrounding the game and the limited edition. For example, below:

You can see that prices are somewhat arbitrary, depending on many factors and just the way the market sees things. It’s also hard to get the game you want. The Lumines Remastered Deluxe Edition, for example, I like, but I can’t spend $100 on it.

Of course, the publisher doesn’t earn anything from these sales, which is interesting. They set their base price for the game, and that’s it. For example, if one of these games sells for about $800, they don’t make a profit, but a reckless gamer/collector or reseller does.

limited game recording

So, like I said, you need to go here and sign up for their newsletter. This is not the actual newsletter they distribute, but a short link that allows you to sign up for their actual newsletter (enter your email address and sign up below). They send emails about new releases, and it’s the best way to stay up to date on current releases.

If you want to buy something on the secondary market, you must first determine what the right price is. I searched high and low for my copy of 2064 myself, and they were all around $150, so I found one that included a trading card, and I bought it on eBay. It was $100 more expensive, which is annoying, but I wanted it, so I paid it.

It’s usually possible to barter or find better deals in Facebook groups, but I’m reluctant to recommend it. You don’t have the same protection as eBay or Amazon if they send you something stupid instead of what you bought. For example, if they sell a new product and it comes without cellophane packaging.

FOMO

Another option, of course, is to opt for digital purchases. Collecting physical objects can be costly. Ultimately, digital downloads of games support the developer and allow you to play the game. So never feel like you have to go somewhere to get a game, and don’t be anxious if you can buy them on the digital market.

controversial limited edition games

There’s actually some controversy surrounding Limited Run Games, and I originally wrote a small piece about it, but it got pretty unfair when I wrote. Here are some statements from the internet and from my research on the subject.

The shipping cost for thebox is $1.99.

When I sell something on eBay, the worst thing I can do is buy a shipping box. I feel like I’m losing out. That’s exactly why I keep sending boxes. A small store charges $1.99 for delivery of a video game in a cheaper bubble box.

Collectors don’t like bubble wrap because it can ruin the game, but ultimately Limited Run Games sells games, not perfect sports cards. So if you want these games made, you should be able to pay extra to get the game in the box if you want it to be perfect.

Limited edition game creates false rarity to drive up prices

This is both true and false. It is a boutique game publisher that produces physical copies of games that traditionally could not afford to release a physical copy. They take on the task of calculating the number of copies purchased, printing that number of copies and sharing the profit with the game developer. They sell the games at wholesale prices, allowing them to focus on producing as many copies as fans want.

Scammers, bots and others in the streetwear and general fashion, video game and processor market, etc. are also doing their best to get copies of LRG games as soon as they come out. This means that LRG is trying to fight the resellers, but they are able to increase the price on the secondary market, which is ultimately not the fault (or the wish) of LRG, which makes no profit from sales on the secondary market.

Production and shipping times are very long

This is something I can’t say anything about without coming across as an apologist. The best I can say is that some pre-ordered editions of the game won’t ship for another year, and even when they do ship, it can take several weeks for all copies of the edition to ship.

It’s a small company, and you should end up buying from them, knowing that it will take a lot of time to produce the game and have it shipped to you.

Knowing which games will be more expensive to sell

Finally, if you want to buy games to resell later when their value rises on the secondary market, there are a few things to consider.

First, there is often little reason for LRG prices to rise. Sometimes the game is so popular that no one wants to part with their copy, and sometimes social media creates a buzz around the game and makes people look forward to its release.

In addition, Best Buy and other retailers will sometimes sell copies of the game later. This means you can buy a physical copy of the game, and for many people, that’s exactly what they need. They don’t care as much about coverage options, etc. This could bring down the price of the original LRG game for a while.

The popularity of games is curiously also related to their cost. Less popular games (i.e. of which fewer copies have been purchased) can become valuable to people who just want to collect for the sake of collecting, not because they like the game.
