Sony Computer Entertainment has announced the next generation of games development studio, Tokyo-based “Studio Japan”, which will be part of a larger corporate entity called “PlayStation Japan Studios”. And what a name it is: it’s something of a mouthful to say, but it’s an appropriate one, because the studio will be based in Tokyo’s Shibuya district, the heart of the Japanese game industry and home to Sony’s main headquarters.

Sony is releasing a new game development studio, Tokyo-based genDESIGN . It is the studio responsible for developing the original God of War games on the PlayStation 2, and the PlayStation Portable title God of War: Chains of Olympus. The studio has had some high profile underlings, including former Sony Japan Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida and God of War II creative director Cory Barlog.

Sony is finally opening its new Japan Studio, and it’s a tremendous accomplishment. The studio is primarily focused on anime and video game development, but it’s made its mark on the industry so far with a huge number of franchises, including the anime adaptation of Attack on Titan. The studio is currently working on a new PS4 game, and it’s been teasing fans with footage showing a tower that’s apparently a mecha. It’s not clear when the game will be released, but it will be a first-party Sony title.

After Japanese studio Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) closed its doors (which is always hard to understand), there was a need for a Japanese studio of its own, and that becomes Team Asobi, known for the Astro Bot series. In Japanese, the word asobu literally means game, so we went for asobi. Those five simple letters formed a surprisingly appropriate name with a good sound, and it stuck! Several years have passed, the team continues to grow and we have launched Astro Bot: Rescue Mission in 2018 and Astro’s Playroom for PlayStation 5 in 2020. And now Team Asobi has become the latest in-house studio in the PlayStation Studios family. At the core of our philosophy is gaming fun, whether it’s the pixel-perfect control of a character, the amazing use of a new controller, or the humorous animation at every turn – that’s what we’re all about. So, who are the Asobis? Well, since we’re a PlayStation game development studio in bustling Tokyo, most of the team members are Japanese.
