In 2012, developer Rebellion Sniper released Elite V2 on Steam, a game loved by fans and critics alike. Years later, the game will be remastered and will even be presented at the Switch at the beginning of the year. With so much success and praise the second race in the series was almost a no-brainer. The new game will greatly improve the story compared to its predecessor, with larger maps, an improved stealth system and a new landscape. This prequel set will later appear on the Switch as Sniper Elite 3 : Last number.
As the name of the game indicates, the full gaming experience is offered here in this port. All content for one or more players is included, as well as any additional CSDs for the original game. There are also exclusive additions to the Switch version, such as motion control options and enhanced support for Pro Controllers. Although, to be honest, adding motion controls to the game actually works very well. It seems that the developers have finally understood that using a gyroscope for aiming works better than aiming with a double analog. What’s more, Rumble HD is used in an amazing way so you can feel the character’s heartbeat when you try to fire a shot, and you can also feel the impact of the bullet.
One of the greatest assets of this sneaky spy is the freedom he offers. Each mission gives you a simple goal, and you can carry them out at will. You can sneak into enemy territory and take out one enemy at a time, or you can stay at a distance and try to shoot enemies from a distance. The game tries to stop you from running and shooting, which, in part, causes tons of damage to enemies and makes your weapons harder to use in close combat. In addition to weapons, you’ll also get lots of extra tools such as mines, rocks, dynamite and other gadgets that you can use in any situation. There are hundreds of ways to solve the task and this gives this game a great repeat value.
The environment plays a crucial role in achieving the objectives of the mission. Because you are only one man facing an army of soldiers, you have to use the landscape as a tool to win. Whether you’re hiding in the tall grass, using stones as shelter or setting up your own camps against the enemies, you’ll find many ways to get rid of the bad guys. Scenarios such as taking a sniper tower, blowing up enemy trucks, shooting near sound generators to mask the sound of your weapon, or setting traps and attracting enemies into them in abundance. Other environmental factors such as the weather and lighting conditions can also influence your approach to different scenarios. This creates a kind of controlled chaos that makes the execution of different missions always unique.
In the past, the switch had several problematic gates, most of which were thrown into the system without being able to operate them properly. That’s not at all the case with Sniper Elite 3. It works without any problems and seems to work well, even in manual mode. That was the Xbox 360, and the PlayStation 3 game contributes to its performance, although, as we have seen in the past, some ports in this generation can be bad if they are not worn carefully enough. A game that emphasizes the accuracy of snipers requires consistent performance, and that’s what you’ll find here.
But not everything is perfect and there is a really annoying problem with the audio. In most games, you begin to hear the enemy’s calls as soon as you get close. Strangely enough, this is not the case here, and in fact you often hear conversations between guards on all sides of the map. It’s really distracting because you always think the enemy might be around the corner of the cliff, but instead he’s a mile away. Another strange problem is that the bodies of enemies sometimes disappear for no real reason. Corpses play an important role in the game, because if other enemies see them, they will be warned of your presence. Disappearing bodies is a good thing in itself, but you also have to look for ammunition and other items.
Een ander frustrerend probleem met het spel is vijandelijke AI. No matter how hard you play the game, they’re stupid as beans. They are very easy to thwart and the enemies don’t actually do much to mock you, even after you’ve been spotted. Even if your enemies find the bodies you left on the ground, they don’t care and pretend they didn’t see them. Although this type of AI is ideal for beginners, it doesn’t help those looking for a real challenge.
Although much of this review has focused on single player content, this game also offers a variety of multiplayer options. There are two match modes in which you can either enter into a sniper fight with other players or compete to see who can get the most shots. There is a hurdle mode with two maps, both of which can be played solo or multiplayer. You can play the entire campaign in co-op mode, and there are three multiplayer challenges where one player has to spot enemies while the other shoots at them. Multiplayer can be played both online and in local cooperatives, which increases the already fantastic repeat value of the game.
At least Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition has something to offer Switch players who want a stealth shooting game. It works very well on the system and has a lot of fun missions to accomplish. There are not many games like this in the system, so it’s great to see that one of them really nail the genre.

Final thoughts: GRAND
Sniper Elite 3: Ultimate Edition is a high quality port that requires a lot of effort. It looks great and works flawlessly, it contains all the content of the original version, including the DLC, and the open character of the game contributes to the repeat value. Stupid artificial intelligence reduces the overall experience a little, but the game still offers a lot of fun.
