Space Invaders has been a favourite game of mine for years and I have always found it pretty hard to find a version that I enjoy. This collection is a wonderful combination of the old and the new. The ’60s style graphics are just fantastic and the game play is still as addictive as ever. I really can’t fault this collection and I think that fans of this classic game will love it.

This week, I decided to review a collection of games that I have been playing on my phone for the last few months. The games are all mobile games, which is to say, made for smartphones and tablets. Some are free, some are paid, but all are good.

Invincible is the name of the new Space Invaders collection from American publisher Tomy (as seen on the box art). Space Invaders is a classic game that was released in 1978 by Taito, and the gameplay of Invincible combines elements of the original Invaders with the latest ‘extreme’ elements, like massive explosions, and more detailed graphics.

We received a tiny collection of Space Invaders games named Space Invaders Forever towards the end of 2020. Despite the fact that it was not a particularly terrible collection of games, I found it to be a bit of a letdown. Especially since it didn’t include any of the franchise’s classic titles, such as the 1978 original or the famous Space Invaders DX, instead choosing to focus on more contemporary (and lesser-known) spinoffs. That was strange, given that Japan had received a complete collection, including with the aforementioned missing games. It took a few more months for ININ Games and Taito to release Space Invaders Invincible Collection, but it was well worth the wait. That is, if you like old-school gaming.

Grandpa, welcome back.

The Space Invaders Invincible Collection contains all three games that were previously included in Space Invaders Forever (thus making that collection obsolete), as well as almost every other significant title in the franchise’s history. For example, the original Space Invaders, which was launched in 1978, is shown in all its its black and white splendor. It also comes in a colorful variant. Also included are Space Invaders Part II and Space Invaders DX (my personal favorite of the lot, despite its critical acclaim at the time). Other games in this collection, such as Lunar Rescue and Majestic Twelve: The Space Invaders Part IV, which play more like Galaga and Galaxian than Space Invaders, are canonically regarded part of the Space Invaders, um, “mythos.” However, I am grateful for their inclusion.

Majestic Twelve: The Space Invaders Part IV plays more like a clone of Galaga or Galaxian than a Space Invaders game.

All of the games in this collection have had their visuals reworked in order to enhance their original resolution. A large number of them, particularly those designed for arcades with a vertical aspect ratio, are also playable in TATE mode. This means you can play these vertically-oriented arcade shooters on the Switch with the screen turned to the side, greatly increasing the quality and screen size of these games while eliminating superfluous side borders.

To be honest, the Space Invaders Invincible Collection is quite simple and straightforward: you receive exactly what you see. There aren’t many features, save for a clever sound-based Easter egg: when you highlight a new game in the main menu, a note is played with the note progression from the original Space Invaders game. The majority of games feature almost no sound and visuals that are as primitive as a video game can go. At the same time, the spritework in these games is so iconic that any kind of update would only serve to tarnish the collection. At the end of the day, this is a simple and enjoyable method to revisit a significant period in gaming history, as well as a means to properly conserve these arcade classics in a more contemporary manner.

Yes, in this game, I’m a chicken. Please don’t ask me why.

Instead of Space Invaders Forever, we should have received Space Invaders Invincible Collection last year. It has its bizarre B-tier spinoffs and contemporary twists on the original, but it also has the obvious: a collection of vintage Space Invaders games in a package that pays tribute to one of gaming’s most significant franchises. As simple as playing a 1978 game may seem in 2021, these games have an undeniable charm, and I strongly advise anybody with even a passing interest in vintage gaming to pick up this collection.

Even if the graphics in many of the games included in the Space Invaders Invincible Collection are extremely basic, I admire the creators’ efforts to keep the aesthetics largely intact. I also like that a TATE mode is included.

A Space Invaders game is the epitome of simplicity when it comes to gameplay. All instructions are well-explained onscreen, whether they are for the 1970s originals or the strange spinoffs since 2010.

Although several of the games in this collection have little to no sound, the sound effects are so famous that we can’t help but admire them.

The Space Invaders Invincible Collection is the appropriate love letter to the iconic arcade series that we didn’t receive last year, particularly since it contains all of the games from Space Invaders Forever.

Final Score: 7.5

The Space Invaders Invincible Collection is now available for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
