Pieces Of Her- Toni Collette Is Not Even Known By Her Own Daughter In This Twisty Crime Thriller

REVIEW OF THE SERIES – Toni Collette’s collection of outstanding mother films continues to expand. She’s portrayed parental figures that are compassionate (“The Sixth Sense”), formidable (“Inheritance”), and complex (“Tara United States”). Collette stars as a highly enigmatic mother in her new Netflix series “Pieces of Her,” whose traumatic background is at the center of this complex thriller’s narrative.

It takes a lot these days to get people’s attention. As our stimulation threshold falls, the term “desensitized” may be best applicable to the ordinary viewer. According to the deluge of true-crime shows and thrillers – some more violent than others – the only remedy to this inactive condition seems to be buckets of blood and a nice jump fright. Pieces of Her offers both in the opening nine minutes of the show.

The first scene is shocking.

Pieces of Her has a solid start as well. Laura (Collette) and her daughter Andy reside in a tiny town (Bella Heathcote). Andy is approaching his 30th birthday and is a little aimless after returning home from New York to care for his mother after she was diagnosed with cancer. But, when a horrific occurrence kicks off a series of events, she is motivated by a desire for purpose.

“Pieces of Her’s” greatest moments are also the most moving in the series. Laura and Andy are the victims of an armed assault at a neighborhood restaurant in the first episode of the series. Laura leaps into action to defend her baby, evidently possessing some half-remembered killer instinct. It’s a scary scenario, but one that gets perplexing when Laura jumps into action to protect her kid. Director Minkie Spiro (“Conspiracy Against America”) shoots the series with a grounded realism that adds to the impact of the action sequences.

At first, the twists and turns seem shocking, but they are simple to figure out afterwards.

What is Laura’s true identity? This is the series’ core question, and for a few tense episodes, the solution seems entirely enigmatic. Pieces of Her presents the audience with so many twists and turns that it leaves us scratching our heads. When the series is many steps ahead of the viewer, it’s thrilling because we have no clue what’s going to happen next. Even those who are used to this kind of mystery will bleed to death when the finest riddles in the series are solved early on. For the first half of the season, at least…

Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case with subsequent installments of Pieces of Her. Viewers are likely to be ahead of the characters by the second half of the season, particularly Andy, the unprepared hero who makes awful mistakes in practically every encounter. As the season’s last episodes air, he continues to reveal fresh mysteries and turns as tediously as the last Tic-Tac from his box, which we’ve been eating simply to get to the end of the empty box.

Based on a book by a well-known crime novelist.

Pieces of Heris is based on the famous novel by Karin Slaughter, a prolific mystery author with over 20 books to her credit. When the core notion is eventually presented, the book transforms into a delicious drama full of romance, political intrigue, and family tragedy. It also has a strong similarity to certain real-life news stories. In flashbacks to the 1980s, a remarkable supporting cast is revealed, including Jessica Barden of “The End of the F***ing World” as a troubled young pianist and the child of a millionaire industrial entrepreneur. Though her on-screen story thread is more vague than the one in Slaughter’s source material, Barden’s sequences are the most powerful in the series.

In addition to Barden, the series’ alternate timeline features Terry O’Quinn from “Lost” and Joe Dempsie from “Game of Thrones,” both of whom portray powerful, charming males. While the series spends a lot of time going over Laura’s life archives, neither actor is adequately used. Their personas lurk in Larua’s memories and gradually take control, but their deception is usually subtle, disclosed in bite-sized portions.

We assumed the series would be enjoyable from beginning to end.

This takes us to the film’s major weakness, despite the fact that it is a riveting thriller propelled along by Collette and Barden’s performances. You could set your watch by the series’ frequent delivery of shocks and facts about Laura’s history. Even at eight episodes, it seems rushed, as if Slaughter’s novel was crammed into a more limited period than the storyline would allow. The scenes are also often protracted, attempting to make us feel something by dwelling on a particular topic long after it would have produced sufficient dramatic tension and charge at that point in the story. As a result of these issues, Pieces of Heris are not always properly spent.

What’s more aggravating is that the show sometimes ignores its audience, as if it doesn’t care whether we comprehend the subtleties or not. While the series strives to be surprising, it sometimes becomes too confused. The roster of individuals situated in two timelines is large, and even non-mysterious ties aren’t defined fully early on, thus any additional contact allows the characters to be perplexed. When we rely only on characters whose names we don’t recognize, we lose out on breathtaking moments.

Collette, at the pinnacle of her profession

Nonetheless, Pieces of Heris is one of the better Netflix programs, which is a big plus considering the current glut. Collette is at the pinnacle of her acting career, and the greatest portions are typically the best, such as Laura’s attempt to forget a lingering memory.

Pieces of Her isn’t perfect – it seems both packed and rushed – but it’s an unquestionably riveting, thrilling, and intriguing series with a terrific cast and an inexhaustible supply of shocks to recommend it.
