CurseForge Core will now provide an SDK to game developers, which will then be integrated into the game and serve as a gateway for users to discover and install mods into the game, on all platforms.
Overwolf CEO Uri Marchand had this to say about the CurseForge core,
We’re at the tipping point of user-generated content, and much of the rapid growth in games is based on in-game creators – a term we’ve coined to classify this new generation of in-game creators and template writers. The more content and customization in a game, the more likely the player will continue to experience that content, extending the life of the game and creating more long-term value for game developers and publishers.
By offering CurseForge Core, we accelerate the distribution of community-generated content and allow publishers to easily and securely integrate mods into their existing and new games. With the support of the leading investors in the field, we are confident that the Overwolf platform will lay the foundation for a new era of AAA game development.
The Series C round was led by Griffin Gaming Partners and Insight Partners, the former being a venture capital firm specializing in gaming content. However, other investors have contributed to the fundraising, including Ubisoft, Warner Music Group, Meg Whitman, Gen.G co-founder Kevin Chow, and existing investors Marker, Intel Capital, Liberty Technology Venture Capital and Atreides Management.
Overwolf’s CurseForge Core offers the following benefits:
- Cross-platform modding: integrate Overwolf’s SDK and open source plugins to allow players to discover and install mods in-game, across all platforms and storefronts.
- Comprehensive analytics dashboard – Get a complete dashboard of mod usage tools to see which mods are popular. Gather information about what content players like, what genres are popular, etc.
- Secure and reliable moderation – every moderation submitted is checked for viruses or inappropriate content. Overwolf has certain guidelines and requirements as to what is allowed, and only authorized content will be published.
- Creator relations and compensation – CurseForge supports creators through a creator rewards program, investment in funds, developer competitions and hackathons.
Nick Tuosto, co-founder of Griffin Gaming Partners and managing director of LionTree, said,
Just as developers use Unity to build a game, we see Overwolf as the foundation for all UGC-related games. Overwolf offers thousands of creators one of the only ways to make money, resulting in more engagement for publishers and more content for players. Services like Overwolf have laid the groundwork for the next generation of user-generated content, and we’re excited to invest in a leader that is moving this space forward.
