With all the hype surrounding the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX series, it’s probably time to start looking at cards that aren’t so hyped, but still get the job done. And one of the best ways to do that is by overclocking your GPU. This ASUS GeForce RTX 3080 Ti founders edition has been out for a while, but we wanted to see how much we could do with it—and we’re pleased to report that you can overclock it and get some pretty impressive results.
We recently reviewed the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition. What does this mean for the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti? Well, first of all, we went ahead and overclocked our sample to run the card with the same level of performance as the RTX 2080 Ti FE. The result is a very solid performance boost that comes with the same level of power consumption. In this review, you will find performance numbers that are very close to the actual results.
The new GeForce RTX 20 series graphics cards are here, and we got a chance to test one out at NVIDIA’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California. The GeForce RTX 2080 is a new mid-range card that is based on the same GPU core as the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, but it comes with 10GB of GDDR6 VRAM instead of the standard 8GB. The GeForce RTX 2080 also comes with a faster clock speed, and it features two additional display outputs. The second one. In June 2021, NVIDIA released the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition with an MSRP of $1,199. It’s time to overclock the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and see if it can beat the factory overclocked GeForce RTX 3090!
The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is essentially a stripped down, but very slightly slimmed down GeForce RTX 3090. It is based on the same Samsung GA102 8nm die as the GeForce RTX 3090, based on the Ampere architecture. It has 10,240 CUDA cores, 112 ROPs, 320 TMUs, 80 RT cores (2nd generation) and 320 Tensor cores (3rd generation). The clock frequency of the Boost Clock is set to 1665 MHz. It has 12GB of GDDR6X instead of the GeForce RTX 3090’s 24GB. It runs at 19 GHz and offers 912 GB/s on a 384-bit bus. The TDP is 350W.
Another factor that makes the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition unique is that it does not use the larger form factor design of the GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition. Instead, it uses a base size similar to that of the GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition. It still uses a reverse fan design and push-pull configuration, but has the same compact footprint as the GeForce RTX 3080 FE. This makes it easier to integrate into smaller enclosures.
In our test, this graphics card proved to be very fast. It was able to keep up with and even surpass (in some situations) our factory overclocked GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING OC video card. This is impressive, and our theory is to increase the GPU boost frequency. Compared to the GeForce RTX 3090, it was able to maintain a higher sustained boost frequency, which allowed it to compute faster in games despite having fewer CUDA cores.
So we’re very curious to see how it performs in terms of acceleration. Will the increase in GPU frequency and memory allow for further overclocking of the GeForce RTX 3090? We’ll see.
Before overclocking the graphics card, we need to find out what level it is running at by default. In our review of the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition, we found that the graphics card averages around 1804 MHz in games. This is well above the specified boost frequency of 1665 MHz. GPU Boost works well to increase the frequency of the graphics card above this frequency. With such a large increase in GPU boost, we were concerned that there wouldn’t be much room for overclocking. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that there was still plenty of gas in the tank.

For overclocking, we used the latest version of EVGA Precision X1, as it has official support for the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. In Precision X1, we were able to increase target performance by 14%, from the default 100% to 114%. This gives us some slack to accelerate. Although we could have regulated the voltage and increased it by +100, we did not feel this was necessary. It was better to leave GPU Boost for dynamic voltage control. Increasing the voltage will only accelerate the reaching of the TDP limit. We set the fans to 100% to allow for the highest possible overclock.
With this graphics card, we managed to overclock the GPU to +130. We managed to increase the memory by +500. This makes the memory work at 20 GHz, instead of the standard 19 GHz. This increases the memory bandwidth to 960 GB/s, instead of the standard 912 GB/s.
Overclocking the memory was really interesting. Technically, we could overclock the memory higher. However, this has led to problems. GDDR6X has improved error correction instead of just rejecting errors. Performance deteriorates if you overclock too much, so you have to find the right balance.
However, the biggest problem with this graphics card was the memory temperature and power consumption when overclocked. Without overclocking it is already very hot and power hungry. Overclocking at standard fan speeds increases memory temperatures to values unacceptable to us. This also results in a drastic increase in power consumption, which lowers the overall clock speed of the GPU, reaching the TDP threshold faster.
Frankly, it doesn’t contribute much to better performance either, since the memory bandwidth of this graphics card is already very high. It is more beneficial to overclock the GPU frequency and not the memory frequency. That’s why we intentionally left it slightly below its maximum overclocking potential, so that the GPU clock can be overclocked to its maximum value.
In the graph above you can see how +130 affects the GPU clock speed. This significantly increases the frequency compared to the standard frequency. By default we had an average frequency of 1804 MHz, with our overclock we have an average frequency of 1953 MHz. You can see that it often fluctuates around 1945 MHz. This is an 8% overclock of the GPU frequency.
According to the GPU-Z sensor data, these frequencies were achieved at 100% fan speed at a GPU temperature of 66°C and a hotspot temperature of 80.5°C. The GPU voltage has reached 1.0750 V.
