The E3 2000 trailer for Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MGS2) was one of the most talked-about videos of the show. The teaser opened with the iconic “preparing to launch” clip, first seen in the original MGS2 trailer that was first shown in 1999 (and narrated by then-president Bill Clinton in 2000), but this time with a fast-paced orchestral version that sounded much more dramatic. It also featured a young Solid Snake (voiced by David Hayter) who claimed he had “a special connection to the Patriots” and was destined “to destroy them.” This clip was shown again, among other trailers, during the annual E3 event in 2016 and 2017.

E3 2000 was a landmark year for gaming, as the industry showcased many of the most exciting and innovative games that we now take for granted. GameTrailers re-created the trailer for MGS2 in a short film that featured voice actors and high-quality motion graphics, but it had been nearly 20 years since the game’s release.

Filmed in 2000, the trailer opens with a brief overview of events that will transpire in the upcoming game. The clip begins with the mother of all cut scenes, presenting its protagonist, Solid Snake, with a mission to save the world. The game’s story is set in the near future, during an era where the world’s leaders have reached an agreement to end all wars. However, this agreement has a major loophole: if any country should attack another country, then a nuclear bomb will be dropped on that country. Throughout the trailer, a disembodied voice discusses this agreement, and explains that the plan is to have the nuclear bomb be launched by “the second major world power”, unmentioned at the time.

Hideo Kojima stunned the gaming industry in 2000 by revealing the thrilling video for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty at the E3 conference.

The trailer made a big impression at the time because of the real-time footage, which did a fantastic job of demonstrating the PlayStation 2’s graphical capabilities like no other game before it, as well as the inclusion of a rousing score by Hollywood composer Harry-Gregson Williams, who provided a new rendition of the original title’s main theme.

Digital Foundry has offered MGS2 fans another incentive to rewatch the famous and legendary trailer by releasing a far higher-quality version that has been improved using the magic of Topaz’s Video Enhance AI program, more than two decades later.

This is an application that enables users to upscale older footage and correct flaws (such as interlacing and artifacts) with a single click using different algorithms. While processing lengthier movies on normal hardware configurations takes a long time, Video Enhance AI’s effects are spectacular and may really bring out subtleties that were difficult to notice even in the original source.

Topaz also offers a companion product called Gigapixel AI that upscales pictures in a similar manner. Image detail and resolution may be increased by 600 percent using deep learning, providing much better results than traditional resampling techniques like bilinear interpolation.

In the gaming business, AI upscaling is gaining popularity for “remastering” graphics and significantly enhancing pre-rendered visual sequences. Rich puts the technology to work in this video by “remastering” Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid 2 E3 2000 launch trailer.
