For many avid gamers, PlayStation is one of the best gaming devices. And although the recent introduction of the Sony PlayStation 5 has made real game fans crazy, the PS4 still has much to offer. But sometimes unforeseen circumstances can arise and you’ll end up in a place where you can play your favourite PS game, only to discover that your TV is no longer working. We’re at the end of 2020, and you know how hard times are. If the pandemic hits us hard, you may not be able to find a teletechnician right away. Does that mean you have to stop playing your games?
Ever walked to a place where you can charge your PS4 and play anywhere on your laptop? If you are like us, your answer to this question is yes! Although connecting the PS4 console to a laptop is not the easiest, we can assure you that it’s not that difficult. But if you have all the information you need, you can make this ambitious process child’s play. So how can we enjoy our favourite PS4 game on a laptop screen? There is a simple solution: the HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cable. Isn’t that great?
However, the HDMI cable does not do it alone. Why is that? HDMI is a one-way connection. The two HDMI sockets, one on the PS4 and one on a laptop, are output terminals. Linking these two things together leads nowhere, at least that’s what you think. With the right information, you can not only make the connection between the two, but also enjoy your favorite game wherever you are.
Do we have your attention now? Read on, as we give you detailed instructions on how to use your laptop screen to play PS4.
First, there are two specific ways to use an HDMI cable to play the PS4 on a notebook screen. The first option is to use a video capture card, while the second option is to use a streaming service. Some other methods, such as the use of OBS (OpenBroadcasting Software) or integrated recording functions, also deserve to be reconsidered. We’ll explain all of this below.
Option 1: Video recording costs
Required materials :
- Laptop computer
- Video recording card
- HDMI with dual function
- Enable file sharing
It’s a fairly simple method. You just have to follow in your footsteps.
Step 1: Check connection
To enable file sharing, go to the PS4 settings menu and access the network settings. Then go to Internet Connection Settings, find your Internet connection and make sure your device is connected.
If you don’t have a wireless connection or if your wireless internet doesn’t work for some reason, don’t panic. You can still play on PS4. Simply configure your PS4 device and PC into a single router via an Ethernet cable. You can now ship without any problems.
Step 2: Software installation
Use the USB port to connect the video capture card to your laptop. Your video recording card probably comes with a manual and software or driver. Install the software to make your card work properly.
If you buy a graphics card, make sure you invest in a high quality device. Such investments will certainly bear fruit in the long term.
Step 3: PS4 and HDMI cabledead card connector
In the penultimate step, connect the PS4 console to the video capture card. You need an extra S-video cable.
Now connect the HDMI cable: the HDMI IN terminal on the board and the HDMI OUT terminal on the PS4 console.
Step 4: Software version
Finally, open the installed software that comes with your graphics card. When you run the application, it searches for the PS4 and as soon as it is found, it appears on your screen. Set the resolution to full screen to enjoy it to the fullest.
Thanks to this simple technology you can stream your PS4 via HDMI to your laptop and enjoy your games without obstacles. Although this method requires some extra tools and equipment, it is simple and fast. However, this is not the most affordable option as it will certainly cost you a few dollars.
If you want to connect the PS4 to a laptop, but don’t want to spend a lot of time on it, or just don’t want to invest in a video recording card, read on, because we suggest an easier way. This option requires a USB cable instead of HDMI.
Option 2: Use of streaming service

Step 7: Connect the PS4 controller via USB port.
Now you need to connect the PS4 DUALSCHOCK 4 controller to your laptop. Use a USB port and cable. You can also connect them wirelessly by pressing the PlayStation and Share buttons on the controller at the same time.
As soon as the LEDs on your controller start flashing, connect them to your PC via USB. It’ll be a few seconds before they’re together.
Step 8: Login to your PS4 account

Step 9: Power outage
Follow the instructions below to disconnect the PS4 from the power supply. Press the PlayStation button on the DUALSHOCK controller 4. Go to Performance settings and select Vacation mode. This cancels streaming and puts your PS4 in standby mode.
It’s easy to use the streaming service to play the PS4 on your notebook screen. As said, this method is very clear and unambiguous.
We have already mentioned two other methods that will give the same result as the ones mentioned above. This is done either via OBS (OpenBroadcasting Software) or via integrated recording functions. However, these options do not allow you to broadcast your game live. With their help, you can record your game and then play it back and transfer it to your notebook screen as video. We will continue to explain how these two approaches work.
Option 3: Using the OBSrecording software
Open broadcast software is really a practical support for such tasks. Many professionals use this application in their daily tasks to achieve comparable results.
How does it work? It’s very simple. First download and install the Remote Play application. Connect it to PS4. Start OBS and go to the Add menu. Select the Capture Window option and press OK to start transferring from the PS4 menu.
You can change the settings of your data records and adjust the parameters to your own needs and preferences.
Option 4: Using the built-in recording modes
The PlayStation 4 has a built-in recording function. This function can be useful if you want to capture and broadcast the game you are playing.
The steps are a little light. What you need to do is play the game of your choice. Then press the release button on the DUALSHOCK control 4.
In this menu you can select a large number of parameters. You now need to make some changes to the configuration. Go to Shared Settings first. Then look at the advanced and broadcast settings. If you do not check the microphone, you can decide whether or not to turn it on. If you choose to thicken this option, you can record your own voice during the game. In the Swap and Transfer menu you can select the actual duration of your video.
Now all you have to do is launch the game you selected for the recording. Even if it’s not a live stream, you can stream it to your notebook screen as a video recording.
Both methods, OBS recording software and Built-in Recording One, are a more cost-effective option. However, they are still the main sources for transferring and recording games from the PS4 to the notebook screen.
These four options are sure to meet your needs for streaming games to your laptop. Depending on how much money you are willing to invest, it will be more or less demanding and difficult to set up. Choose the method that best suits you and your needs and requirements. Whatever option you choose, you won’t regret it.
For years PlayStations have been a source of entertainment and happiness for many of us. Versatility and lots of games – that’s what makes this device so big and unique.
In 2020, with the pandemic and the rules of social distance, PS4 is a great tool to stay in touch with other players and like-minded people, have fun, relax and focus on more optimistic things.
Now, using a few tips we’ve just shown you, you’ve realised that you don’t need a big TV to play on the PS4 console. Anyone can do it with their own laptop. Even after these difficult times you can still use these new methods and techniques. They are very advantageous because they offer a certain transferability and create a simplified game structure.
Some of these tips require an extra investment – you will need to purchase additional tools or equipment. However, these purchases are one-off investments which will pay for themselves in the long term. They will shorten the setup time and improve your gaming experience.
