Mass Effect: Andromeda has been out since January, and it’s been a mixed bag so far. Reviews have been a mixture of praise and disappointment, the game has been plagued by bugs, and sales have been disappointing.

The EA commentariat has no doubt seen the announcement that Mass Effect: Andromeda has sold more than one million copies in its first week alone. Despite the criticism of the game’s story and characters, this represents a massive achievement for BioWare, and a vindication for EA’s controversial decision to drop the dedicated Mass Effect franchise in favor of a new Mass Effect role-playing game.

The Mass Effect series had a pretty interesting past in the gaming world, which I don’t think there’s really much need to go over here. In short, the Mass Effect series has always been a pretty successful series, but there have been some problems with its sales numbers in the past, which EA has been trying to overcome for a while now.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition, a collection of remastered versions of the critically acclaimed and renowned Mass Effect games, was published in May by BioWare.

Despite the fact that the original Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 have all been played millions of times by fans all around the globe, the Mass Effect Legendary Edition has outsold many people’s expectations.

Among them is EA’s own CEO Andrew Wilson, who acknowledged today during his company’s Q1 FY 2022 earnings call that the game’s sales success has so far “far exceeded” the publishing giant’s expectations.

While Wilson didn’t provide any particular figures in his prepared comments, the acknowledgment is encouraging for BioWare and its next Mass Effect game, which may have been overlooked after the franchise’s losses following the poor reception of 2017’s Mass Effect Andromeda.

Wilson also seemed to reveal that Respawn Entertainment is working on a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, a Star Wars action-adventure game. The game’s sales also surprised EA, selling over 10 million copies only a few months after its November 2020 release.

The brands and IP that we are developing have long-term value. The release of Mass Effect Legendary Edition — a remaster of the original three Mass Effect games – rekindled fan excitement across the globe, resulting in sales that well exceeded our expectations. The release of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order for Xbox One X and PlayStation 5 provided an opportunity for new and returning players to dive into this incredible game. We’ll keep investing in both of these brands, as well as more of our incredible IP.

Worldwide, Mass Effect: Andromeda had a disappointing launch. The game, which was developed by BioWare, under the EA label, had a prior history of performance issues as well as lackluster fan reception. EA didn’t seem too concerned, though, since it felt that Mass Effect was a brand with a dedicated fan base, and that the game was likely to sell well regardless. Mass Effect: Andromeda, though, lacked the advertising budget, and as a result failed to meet EA’s sales targets..
