10. Life is strange
Life Is Strange, which is number 10 on our list of the 10 most mysterious games, is an episodic third-person graphic adventure series that consists of multiple chapters. Each chapter has its own central character and its own unique character in its time. For example, the first episode is dedicated to Max Caulfield, who is able to go back in time and begins investigating the murder of his childhood friend Chloe Price.
In the second episode, the main character is Chloe Price herself, and so on. The game focuses on everyday characters and their struggles in their personal lives, making it easy to empathize with the character. The game contains numerous quests, puzzle solving, dialogue branching and more. It is playable on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox X series and Xbox One.
9. Fire station
Firewatch is a first-person adventure game whose plot revolves around your character Henry, a firefighter in the Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming, in 1989. Along the way, he witnesses strange and bizarre happenings in and around his tower and makes some disturbing discoveries. The only means of communication is a walkie-talkie, which can be used to communicate with Delilah, the player’s master. The game leaves the player with an insidious fear of being left alone in these mysterious circumstances, and the only lifeline is the walkie-talkie.
The game also focuses on the relationship between your character and his superior Delilah. They can be manipulated in-game through a series of selection calls that affect gameplay. The tension in the game is huge, and players feel like they can’t trust anyone, making Firewatch a complete mystery game. The game is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Macintosh and classic Mac OS operating systems.
8. What remains of Edith Finch
This is a first-person adventure game. Players must edit Edith Finch’s diary and can quickly slip into her role. She believes her family is under a curse that causes all but one to die in a very unusual way. The story is mysterious, with layers of unknown events piling up towards the end of the game. The developers have managed to place a near-perfect storyline, rich music that complements the game, and an emotional power that keeps you involved in the game without you even realizing it.
From hidden rooms to sinister passageways, the character explores a series of clues that lead to the grand finale. Without giving away any further spoilers, the game is playable on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
7. Fahrenheit Indigo Prophecy
Farenheit is a third-person adventure game that immerses you in the mind of our protagonist, Lucas Kane, who commits murder while possessed by supernatural powers. The player can alternate between the protagonist and the two detectives in charge of the case. The character experiences flashbacks and some connections to Mayan culture, followed by AI uprisings that put the game together for the finale.
Sharp contrasts between ancient civilizations, modernity and a futuristic world have their place in the game, without disturbing the mysterious atmosphere and continuity of the game. Players can expect three different endings depending on the choices they make during the game. It will be available in 2015 for Windows, Android, iOS, Linux and macOS, as well as the PlayStation 4.
6. Gemini ryu
Gemini Rue is a cyberpunk graphic adventure game set in the 23rd century. The century. Players can switch from one character to another: Asriel Odin, an assassin turned lawman, and Delta-Six whose memory has been erased. Both are spread across the galaxy and have two completely different storylines. Players can change the story so that their fates become intertwined over the course of the game. The game completely blindsides you with the direct and harsh truth of the low value of a human life, setting the tone of this game.
The game is supposed to have a film noir atmosphere, which we approve of. It is a cinematic universe in itself, where tension reigns supreme and mysterious tasks must be solved. Definitely yes on our list of top 10 mystery games. It can be played on Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, iOS, Android and Linux operating systems.
5. Your story
Her-Story is a 1994 single-player interactive video game. The atmosphere is very 90s, with old technology and realistic images of police interrogations in which Hannah Smith tells about her murdered husband. The game offers players a total of 271 videos, in random order, which they have to search and find one by one. Players are drowning in broken timelines and inappropriate information, trying to make sense of the interrogations, and tend to go around in circles. The game evolves as you add keywords to the system’s database to find videos based on the clues you’ve collected from previous videos.
It is amazing, just the possibility that you can go from dead ends to possible conclusions, and at the end of this amazing realization, you have lost. Lost in not knowing what the truth is anymore, searching and rewinding, creating a timeline and still not sure it could be all wrong. This game is a personal favorite, and we highly recommend you play it. It is available on iOS, Microsoft Windows, OS X and Android.
4. Paradise Killer
Paradise Killer is an outdoor adventure crime thriller set in the 3D world of Paradise Island. In this crime novel, your character Lady Love Dies (who is immortal, by the way) can investigate and collect clues and evidence to solve a series of mysterious murders taking place on the island. The game exudes an air of future-retroism, and the irony of an island that looks like a dreamscape but is home to mass murderers and human-worshipping aliens gives you distorted signals.
Over the course of the game, your character collects clues, brings people to justice, and performs all of the detective’s tasks in exciting and engaging visual gameplay. The game has received very positive reviews and is playable on Windows and Nintendo Switch.
The-Room is a three dimensional puzzle video game. The special thing about this game is that it takes place around a box in a room of the house. Without a complicated plot or multiple ramifications at once, the game is simple but full of creepy mystery. The mystery is revealed at a pace that keeps the player engaged throughout the game.
The room forms a visually appealing world that feels like you’re locked inside yourself, and players unravel the puzzles that present themselves to take control. The game changes tone in an instant and keeps you alert. From beautiful dark aesthetics to minimalism, all types of mixed feelings are well felt in this space. It is available on OS, Android, Microsoft Windows and Nintendo Switch.
2. External nature
Outer Wilds is an action-adventure game in which the player embodies a lone astronaut exploring a solar system stuck in a 22-minute time loop. As the story progresses, it feels like the game is ultimately about finding the right clues that lead to the right answers, or dying. Time is running out and you’re feeling rushed. Whether it’s solving mysterious puzzles, a missing alien race, or saving the universe from an explosion, the game puts you in a cape, in this case an astronaut suit, and simply gives you the task of saving the entire universe.
The game’s plot literally transcends the world and makes you question the basics of existence, which is hard if you ask us. It certainly deserves its place in our top mystery games of all time. The game is playable on Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.
