ASUS is a company that hardly needs any ideas, which makes work easier. The company has been in existence since the 1980s and has grown into a powerful enterprise in the field of information technology. The company produces a wide range of products, from motherboards to workstations, laptops, video cards, routers, monitors and even mobile phones. The company is still considered a motherboard manufacturer, especially by those of us who remember that it was only known for that.

Players Republic

ASUS also created its own brand of Republic of Gamers before everyone started copying it. It was a brand that was developed especially for players and sets the bar for what is the aesthetics of the game. Motherboards prior to the ASUS ROG brand were generally numerous disgusting and inappropriate colors, which, if viewed carefully, were pure thoughts. Sometimes you saw a crossed-out offer from ASUS or someone else, but it was no different than the standard retail price.

Originally the ROG motherboards were the best of the best and not only the most expensive in their class, but without a doubt also the best in their class. Some of the motherboards that bore the name ROG were the undisputed rulers of their time. Of course, these offers had a price tag that reflected that.

Today, the ROG line is more complete because it covers a wider range of price points. However, the motherboard we are talking about today is at the top of the spectrum.


ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XII EXTREME Motherboard Specifications

ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XII EXTREME is the last iteration of the Maximus line, which started about 10 years ago as one of the first recordings of the ROG family. It uses an Intel Z490 Express chipset and supports 1200 socket LGA processors and 10th generation Intel Comet Lake processors. This is not what you would call a value decision. At the time of writing, Maximus XII Extreme was worth $742.99 on the Amazon. It’s not the most expensive motherboard for 10th generation Intel processors. Generation, but it’s up there.

It is ASUS’ best offer in terms of functionality and performance. Its components and integrated functions are the reason why it is so expensive.


The packaging is standard for the ASUS Republic of Gamers series. It has a thick cardboard structure and a shiny surface. Inside, the motherboard is placed in a cardboard box covered with an anti-static plastic screen that holds it in place while you can see the motherboard through it. There are accessories under the tread of the motherboard board. They are divided into different sections to separate these accessories for some reason. Some items are specially separated for packaging so that they do not shift during transport.

In the box you will find a huge range of accessories. This is one of the largest and most complete sets I have seen for a motherboard in the main segment. The package looks more like what you would expect from a HEDT motherboard. However, the price of ROG MAXIMUS XII EXTREME is about the same as that of ASUS X299 Prime Edition 30, so this is no surprise.

In the box you will find the following accessories: Operating instructions, 1x ROG logo sticker, 3x M.2 screw box, 1 MOS cooling set (fan holder and 40 mm x 40 mm fan), 1 set of fan extensions II (6 x 4-pin connections for fan box, 3 x RGB connections, 3 x 2-pin temperature sensor connections), 1 set of power cables for fan extensions II, 1 set of NODE connection cables for fan extension II, 1 set of screws for fan extension II, 2x mini DisplayPort cable, 1x ROG large format sticker, 1x Q-connector, 1x Wi-Fi antenna(s), 1x RGB strip extension cable (80 cm), 1x extension cable for address LED, 3x thermistor cable, 1x USB stick with utilities and drivers, 8x SATA woven ROG 6G cable, 1x ROG DIMM.2 with cooler, 2x M.2 pad for ROG DIMM.2, 1x 2 in 1 rubber seal, 1x multi-bit ROG screwdriver, 1x THUNDERBOLTEX 3-TR card, 1x ASUS TB header cable, 1x USB2.0 cable and a ROG keychain.


Of course, this is a fairly extensive list. But there are a few that are worth mentioning. In particular, we have a DIMM.2 card. This allows the installation of two M.2 devices in vertical alignment parallel to the memory slots. Physically, it is almost identical to the pin assignment of a DIMM slot, but it has a different notch that prevents the DIMM from being installed in that slot. The DIMM.2 also has two thermal sensors if you want to benefit from temperature control. The DIMM.2 card also supports devices up to 110 mm in length or devices of type 22110, as they are also called.

Fan extension card II

Another unique but important feature is the Fan Expansion Board II. This allows you to connect and control 6 extra fans on your motherboard. The Fan Expansion Board II can be easily integrated into the motherboard as it allows full control of the fan heads on the board. Just like the motherboard, they allow you to control the PWM and DC modes. The fan extension II is also connected via its own button control cable. It also makes it possible to connect additional Fan Extension II cards in series to further increase the possibilities.

Talk about extra features: The Fan Extension II board also includes additional headers for RBB LED backlighting and additional headers for temperature sensors. Unlike previous versions of this unit, the Fan Extension II card has racks and mounting brackets that allow the unit to be mounted as a 2.5 drive by means of flat mounting instead of side mounting. This allows 2.5-inch space on the hard drive in some enclosures to protect the Fan Extension II card, which is a specific solution to a problem that previous models had.

Mainboard characteristics and arrangement

There’s a lot to say about the circuit board and the presentation of the ASUS Maximus XII Extreme. This motherboard has not only a large number of built-in functions, but also a very complex and robust design.


To be honest, ASUS Maximus XII Extreme is one of the most beautiful motherboards I have ever seen. I must have had over 50 myself, and in the last 15 years I’ve looked at about 200 motherboards. The fact is that it is well done and very versatile. ASUS’ attention to detail here shows what a company can do when it’s not too worried about costs and can use its technical knowledge with fewer constraints.

The circuit board has 14 fan heads. Some are dedicated to processor pumps and fans, but there are 14 in total. Additional 6-way fan heads are included with the ASUS Fan Extension II card. It seems absurd to some of you. However, if you have already designed a special liquid cooling system with multiple coolers, you will find that you can reach a large number of fans quite quickly. This is especially true in push/pull situations where you literally double the number of fans with fans on both sides of the cooler.

Clearly, ASUS has designed this motherboard for use in uncomfortable gaming facilities where you will use your CPU and most likely your water-cooled GPU. Sensors and water flow sensors have been added for this purpose, so that you can make the desired configuration.

In addition, ASUS LN2 has provided support to anyone who wants to move in this direction. ASUS also includes an on/off switch and a flexible button that acts as a reset switch as standard. However, the actual behavior of this button can be changed in the UEFI. There is also a safe start button and a retry button to force the system to try the POST again with settings that may have failed before. It is not an intuitive function in the sense that few people can see the reason for its use, but it works in specific situations. There is also a BIOS switch to select the BIOS ROM you want to use as there are two BIOS ROMs installed on this motherboard.

The board also has four RGB headers. Two are ASUS audio headers and the other two are RGB address headers. You will also notice that ASUS has used its Procool II power connectors for the 24-pin ATX connector and the two 8-pin power connectors. This feature is due to the use of a very muscular and much thicker calibration current connector, which is able to handle higher voltages that do not heat up when you pump tons of current through the motherboard.

There are many other connectors, such as the ASUS node connector for use with the fan extension card Fan Extension II. There is also a Thunderbolt collector and of course a ton of USB 2.0, 3.2 Gen 1 and 3.2 Gen 2 connectors. You get two of the four connectors for each USB header.

In terms of layout, ASUS ROG Maximus XII Extreme didn’t like it very much. ASUS has grouped all the fan heads significantly. There was a time when fans were sprayed everywhere. They are now grouped together because you let them walk in the same places one after the other. The general layout of the port is as good as the slots.

Still, there are a few things to consider. While the double 8-pin connectors are exactly where you’d expect them to be, they run over into the MOSFET’s cooling system. As a result, they are generally difficult to use in some chassis. ASUS has also decided to use an older 4-pin Molex connector for additional PCIe performance. I wish they wouldn’t, because that connector isn’t really used anymore. Finally, you must connect this special item to the power supply if these connectors cannot be used elsewhere in your assembly. It’s insignificant, but it’s boring. Electrical connections of the SATA type would be better here. ASUS has set it up so that it doesn’t cause any problems with expansion cards.

On this front panel, ASUS has decided to place only three expansion slots on the motherboard. Two PCI Express slots x16 and a third PCIe x4 slot. The card also has two M.2 slots, which means that the DIMM.2 card is optional. Updating the memory in the built-in system is much easier, so I recommend you install the drives you originally had on your card and use DIMM.2 later for the update. This would especially apply to systems with liquid cooling and rigid pipes, where you don’t have much flexibility to move things around.

ASUS has an OLED display in the center of the motherboard. It’s like a trick, and although it’s a kind of trick, it’s good because you can use it to display all kinds of information, like the temperature of the processor and other things.

Finally, ASUS has strangely reversed the DIMM slots, a one-way lock in the direction of the expansion slots. These slots were actually invented to bridge the gap between DIMM slots and expansion slots, where graphics cards often had to be removed to install RAM. This is not a problem here, because the expansion slot space is far enough away from the DIMM slots. It’s just unusual for ASUS slots to be installed this way because it has been reset from all the other cards I’ve seen on them.
